The new Scotland U16 Girls squad held its first weekend camp of the season in December at Glasgow Green and their manager, Justine Westwood, takes us through what this entailed.

With a squad of over 40 girls, we had a packed programme, which started off with an excellent stretching session from squad physio Zoe. We then split the squad into two, with one group heading out to a pitch session led by two of our coaches Fi and Amy. The second group prepared for the afternoon’s match against the U18 girls.

The match was well contested with some great play from both squads, and the U16s came out winners by one goal to nil in freezing conditions. Thanks to the U18 squad and management team for the competition.

Game over we headed to the Glynhill for the evening, with the usual great hospitality by the hotel. The evening saw a video session and a strength and conditioning session before the girls headed to a well earned rest.

Sunday morning saw us up bright and early, and following a couple more workshops, back at Glasgow Green where we took the opportunity to watch the Senior Squad train for the morning. As Becky Ward was injured, she was not taking part in the training, and so she spent time with the U16 squad pointing out training moves, and answering lots of questions!

Lunch was followed by an inspirational talk by Kaz Cuthbert who explained her journey to the senior team, pointing out the choices that she had to make in order to reach this level.

We finished the weekend with further pitch training, with the additional benefit of Becky Ward and Vikki Bunce imparting their knowledge.
